Osaka: Japan’s Rising Star and Luxury Hotspot.
Forget Tokyo. 2025 belongs to Osaka. This vibrant city is not just hosting Expo 2025; it’s igniting a cultural revolution. Add to that a calendar overflowing with electrifying annual events, and you have a destination on fire. But the real story? A luxury hotel explosion rippling through Osaka and neighboring Kyoto. The entire Kansai region is transforming into a haven for high-end travelers, and that’s exactly why we’ve crowned it a must-visit destination for 2025.
Osaka called to us this year, not just with its vibrant street food and dazzling lights, but with the promise of a new jewel: Patina Osaka. Freshly unveiled in April, this hotel marks only the second exquisite creation from the art-centric luxury group, following its breathtaking sister property in the Maldives. Now part of the Marriott Bonvoy family under the Design Hotels banner, Patina Osaka beckoned with an irresistible allure.
Fresh off the bullet train and eager to explore, we dove headfirst into Osaka’s vibrant heart, landing at the newly opened Patina Osaka. Forget sterile hotel reviews; this is a taste of what awaits – a firsthand glimpse behind the curtain of a hotel buzzing with debut energy. Consider this your insider’s guide to the Patina Osaka experience.
First impressions
Twenty floors above Osaka’s bustling streets, the Patina Osaka lobby unveiled a view that stopped me cold. “How could this space have existed without a hotel?” The thought echoed in my mind, a constant refrain throughout my whirlwind two-day stay.

ERIC ROSEN/THE POINTS GUY
Osaka Castle, a jade-crowned jewel set in a vibrant park, lies just across the street. It’s a view so breathtaking, it’s almost unbelievable no hotel has claimed it until now. The hotel’s glass tower, a modern counterpoint to the ancient fortress, offers front-row seats to the castle’s splendor, especially when the park explodes in a confetti shower of cherry blossoms.
Patina’s design hums with the spirit of its location. Breathtaking castle views explode from guest rooms and common areas, anchoring the hotel to its majestic setting. But the magic goes deeper. Bedroom headboards, crafted from textured washi paper, echo the castle’s rugged foundation stones. At the entrance, a Setouchi stone wall, striated with geological time, whispers tales of the past, connecting guests to layers of history, including the ghost of the nearby Naniwa-no-Miya Palace.

ERIC ROSEN/THE POINTS GUY
The hotel’s design whispers of old Japan – polished wood, inky tiles, and tatami mats underfoot – yet breathes with a thoroughly modern soul, ignited by its singular art collection.

Imagine a salvaged ship motor, reborn as a quirky flower vase, whispering tales of the sea. Nearby, an Osaka mural shimmers with gold leaf, weaving together centuries of street life into a single, breathtaking panorama. And then, immerse yourself in Takashi Makino’s video wall, where the vibrant seasons of Osaka unfold in a mesmerizing dance of light and color.

Ascending the spiral staircase connecting the 19th and 20th floors is like climbing a waterfall frozen in time. Washi paper borders, each painstakingly hand-dipped in indigo, mimic the swirling cascade of a classical Japanese silkscreen, a subtle nod to Osaka’s watery soul – the “City of Water.”

The corner junior suite sprawled out to a generous 807 square feet. Just beyond the entrance, a cozy nook beckoned, an elegant space to shed the world and slip off your shoes.
Sunlight streamed onto the low sectional, its built-in side tables gleaming, inviting relaxation. Against the window, a cozy two-seat table bathed in the warm glow of a hanging floor lamp, beckoning intimate conversations. On the wall, a 65-inch flat-screen TV stood sentinel, ready to transport viewers to other worlds. The living area was the room’s heart.

The bedroom was less a room, more a private sanctuary. A tatami-matted window seat nestled within a deep alcove beckoned, promising sun-drenched mornings lost in the pages of a favorite book or lazy afternoons dreaming to the gentle rustle of leaves outside.

The king-size bed, draped in Frette linens the color of a stormy sky, beckoned. Above, a toffee-leather headboard served as a luxurious frame for the sculpted washi paper panel, its delicate patterns whispering secrets against the backdrop of rich, dark wood paneling. Even here, nestled in such opulence, a discreetly mounted TV offered a portal to another world.

The midcentury armchair and ottoman sat silently by the bed, ignored. My feet, however, knew the way to the balcony, drawn by the siren song of castle views and the promise of morning coffee on the cushioned chaise lounge.

The bathroom, a sanctuary steps from the entryway, unfolded in a sophisticated dance of textures. Dark gray stone tiles met light wood panels in a harmonious embrace, framing twin vanities where gleaming copper fixtures stood like elegant sentinels.

The glass-walled suite was a temple of cleansing. At its heart, a colossal soaking tub beckoned, while overhead, a rainfall shower promised a drenching deluge. A nod to Japanese tradition came in the form of an onsen-style shower stool, complemented by a sleek, hand-held showerhead for ultimate control. Bamford’s luxurious, full-sized products lined the shelves, an invitation to indulge. Yet, it was the rugged stone wall, whispering tales of Osaka Castle’s ancient foundations, that truly captivated me.

But hold! Before the aroma overwhelms and the flavors captivate, lift your gaze. Suspended a breathtaking 171 feet above, a colossal sculpture commands attention. Born from the earth itself – tree bark and salvaged wood – it writhes and reaches like a vast, exposed root system. This living artwork echoes P72’s plant-centric philosophy, a tangible reminder that every dish, like every moment, is rooted in history.
